Baek Nam-ki’s case is an obvious abuse of police power and a clear breach of human rights laws
Baek Nam-ki has died, an elderly farmer knocked down by direct spray from a police water cannon during a protest last year. Our deepest sympathies are with him and our condolences are offered to his family.
Baek Nam-ki’s case is an obvious abuse of police power and a clear breach of human rights laws.
Despite sufficient evidence such as the video footage of the scene showing the police continuing to spray Baek Nam-ki, even after this elderly farmer fell, and with the testimony that the police violated safety guidelines by using too much force at the rally by striking Baek Nam-ki with a stronger-than-recommended water pressure, the prosecution is demanding an autopsy on his body to “clarify” his cause of death.
The decision of autopsy already has been strongly opposed by the bereaved, and for sure, it will raise a storm of protest by citizens as well.
No government official responsible for Baek Nam-ki’s death has apologized, and now the government appears to have lost?forever?its chance to apologize.
The dignity of a country comes from its government’s attitude toward its people. Officials should treat the people according to the scale of justice and the scale that measures human rights, not the self-serving scale of government power.
The lack of a single apology for Baek Nam-ki’s death by a government official shows that the country has lost its dignity.
We will keep calling on investigation to reveal the truth of the case of Baek Nam-ki at any cost. We will not tolerate any abuse of governmental authority. We will fight to the end to protect human rights of our people.
Much to our regret, Baek Nam-ki’s death will remain as a classic example of this government’s lack of respect for human dignity.
His death by the abuse of police power will remain forever in our hearts. May he rest in peace.

백남기 농민사건은 명백한 경찰력 남용과 인권침해이다
작년 시위에서 경찰의 물대포에 맞아 쓰러진 연로한 농부 백남기씨가 돌아가셨다. 삼가 명복을 빌며 그의 유가족께도 심심한 위로를 전한다.
백남기 농민사건은 명백한 경찰력 남용이자, 명백한 인권법 침해이다.
연로한 농부 백남기씨가 바닥에 넘어진 이후까지 물대포를 계속해서 쏘는 영상과, 경찰이 규정보다 더 센 수압을 사용함으로써 안전 가이드라인을 지키지 않는 등, 충분한 증거가 있음에도 불구하고, 검찰은 그의 사인을 “명확하게 밝히기” 위해서 부검을 요청하고 있다.
부검 결정은 이미 백남기씨 유가족의 강력한 저항에 부딪혔고, 시민들로부터 저항의 태풍이 불 것이 분명하다.
정부 관계자 누구도 그의 죽음에 대해 사과하지 않았고, 이제 정부는 그 사과를 할 기회를 영원히 놓친 것 같다.
국가의 품격은 국민을 향한 태도에서 비롯된다. 국가는 정의의 저울과 인권의 저울로 국민을 대해야지, 국가의 잇속을 차리는 권력의 저울로 국민을 대해서는 안 된다.
정부가 백남기씨에게 단 한번의 사과도 하지 않은 것은 국가가 품격을 잃었음을 보여주는 것이다.
우리는 백남기 사건의 진실을 반드시 밝혀 내기 위해서 철저한 조사를 지속적으로 촉구 할 것이다. 우리는 조금의 공권력 남용도 허용하지 않을 것이다. 우리는 인권을 지키기 위해 끝까지 싸울 것이다.
유감스럽게도 백남기씨의 죽음은 이 정부가 인간의 존엄을 존중하지 않는 것을 보여준 대표적인 사례로 남을 것이다.
경찰력에 의한 그의 죽음은 우리의 가슴 속에 오래도록 남아 있을 것이다. 다시 한 번 삼가 고인의 명복을 빈다.
